Anyone interested in online tutoring jobs for teens may be wondering how old you have to be to tutor? The answer is, it depends on where you want to tutor.
Tutors tend to work either for themselves, by setting up their own tutoring business, or they work for an online tutoring company.
If you work for yourself, there is no minimum age required to become a tutor. All that is required to work as an independent private tutor is that you must be proficient in the subject you are tutoring. That being said, it may be more difficult to find students who are willing to be tutored by someone much younger than themselves.
For that reason, you may only be able to find students to tutor who are around your own age. This should not be that challenging though since you are already in a school filled with students around your age.
If you work for an online tutoring company, the age requirement varies by company. Most online tutoring companies only hire tutors who are at least 18 years old.
Don’t be dismayed though because there are at least two online tutoring companies who are more than happy to hire tutors are under 18 years old. These two companies are Tutorcare.com and StudyRoom.com. They both offer peer-to-peer tutoring for high school and college students and the minimum age to join these sites is 13 years old:
Tutorcare hires student tutors in high school and college. Tutors can make money four different ways: answering homework help questions, uploading tutorials, online tutoring sessions and in-person tutoring sessions. The site doesn’t require tutors to work a minimum number of hours and allows flexible scheduling. Tutors can set their own rates. The site does charge a fee but it is a flat fee of $12. Payments are made via direct deposit or Paypal. The minimum age to join is 13 years old.
Study Room hires student tutors in both high school and college. The site doesn’t provide a lot of details about the job but does say that students send in questions or requests for tutoring sessions via the website and then the site notifies you via email or mobile app and allows you to chose which tutoring requests you want to do. The pay rate is up to $20 per hour. The minimum age to join is 13 years old.
If you are at least 18 years old, your options are much better. Not only can you work for the two companies I just mentioned, but there are also at least two online tutoring companies that hire 18 years old who do not have a college degree. These companies are Tutapoint and Kaplan.
Tutapoint hires tutors for one-on-one tutoring sessions for high school level courses. Although the company doesn’t require tutors to have a college degree it does require tutors to have at least two years of tutoring experience. Pay rates start at $14 per hour and the rate goes up the more you tutor.
Kaplan hires tutors to help students pass the Kaplan standardized tests. Kaplan does not require its tutors to have previous teaching or tutoring experience. That being said, becoming a tutor for Kaplan is still a challenge because it requires its tutors to be proficient in all sections of the exam that they want to teach. To be more specific, the primary requirement to be a Kaplan tutor is you must have taken the exam you are interested in teaching and scored at or above the 90th percentile. If you meet this requirement, the application process is lengthy and takes between 3-5 weeks. The majority of tutoring positions at Kaplan are part-time but there are sometimes full-time positions available. Kaplan does not reveal how much its tutors are paid.
