This is a more specific writing-related subreddit page where clients post freelance writing jobs and opportunities. Freelance writers and editors can also post on the page to advertise their services. The minimum age to join Reddit is 13 years old.
Fyi, the gigs posted on Reddit are private offers by people not officially associated with Reddit. Be careful who you give your personal information to and know that Reddit is not responsible if the client fails to pay you. It is best to ask for full or at least partial payments upfront to avoid being scammed.
Craigslist is an online classifieds website where you can find writing opportunities as well as other job opportunities.
To look for writing jobs, check out the section titled “Jobs” on the your city/state’s main page and click on the link that says “writing/editing.”
Another place to find writing jobs is to check out the section that says “Gigs” on your city/state’s main page and click on the link that says “writing.” There is no minimum age to use Craigslist.
Fyi, just liked Reddit, the gigs posted on Craigslist are private offers by people not officially associated with Craigslist. Fiverr is a popular online marketplace where members can offer various services for a $5 fee. There are a few ways to make money as a writer on Fiverr.
The first way is to post multiple gigs offering to write a 400-500 word article on a specific topic. Although it is possible to post just one gig offering to write an article on any topic, it creates a lot of confusion because clients will often first contact you to see if you are comfortable writing about their specific topic.
Sometimes, you won’t be comfortable or familiar with the topic so you’ll have to turn the offer down. If you instead offer an article on a specific topic, one that you feel confident writing about, it clears up any confusion and makes it easier for the client to find your gig and purchase it.
Fiverr allows you to post 20 gigs per account, so you can offer a variety of topics. Posting multiple gigs also increases your chances of your gigs being found among the competition.
It’s best to write about not only a topic that you are comfortable with, but also one that is in high demand. Some of the most requested article topics on Fiverr are:
Diet and weight loss
Travel and leisure
Education and school
Fitness and health
Insurance and life insurance
Another way to make money writing articles on Fiverr is by selling PLR articles. PLR means Private Label Rights and anyone who purchases a plr article purchases the content of the article as well as the publishing rights. This means they can use the article anyway they want and can even republish it under their own name.
Although on other sites, plr articles usually sell for $1 per article and are typically sold in packs of 5 to 10, plr on Fiverr sells for a lot less. Plr articles on Fiverr are usually sold in packs of 400-1500 for $5. The upside is that, because the articles are so cheap, plr gigs usually sell well on the site. The hard part is just writing all of the content or finding free plr to sell.
Selling plr articles is a nice form of passive income too. You write all the articles once, upfront, and then you can sell them over and over. Write all your articles in txt. format, so that any computer can open the file, and then compress the articles into a zip file so you can easily upload and deliver them when someone buys your gig.
An upside of selling plr on Fiverr is that once you have been active on the site for more than 30 days, have completed at least 10 orders, have maintained at least a 4 star rating and have a low cancellation rate, you can offer two gig extras with each gig you post. These are usually additional products or services that a client can purchase in addition to the original gig. For plr articles, some common extras are 30-50 copyright free images to use with the articles or some additional plr articles on a similar or related topic.
If you’re not interested in writing articles, yet another way to make money as a writer on Fiverr is by writing and selling ebooks. The types of ebooks that sell on Fiverr tend to be how-to books and tutorials that will either teach the reader something or help solve a problem.
A plus side to selling ebooks on Fiverr is that you can take advantage of gig extras to sell additional ebooks or products that are related to your original ebook topic. It’s a great way to make more money on upsells, which is when you sell multiple products to one customer.
The minimum age to join Fiverr is 13 years old. Payouts on Fiverr may be requested 14 days after the gig was marked complete. There is no minimum payout and payments are made via Paypal, Fiverr Revenue Card or through on of Fiverr’s other withdrawal providers.
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing
Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing program is a great resource for writers looking to sell their ebooks. Although it seems like successfully selling ebooks is very difficult, there’s actually a formula to it that will help you succeed.
First, you should pick one niche or topic and write a series of books on it. Doing this helps you build a loyal fanbase who will eagerly buy each book you publish, provided that you do a good job writing your books.
Having multiple books for sale on a related topic makes upsells easier because if a customer is already interested enough to buy one of your books on a particular topic, they will be more likely to buy another one on the related topic.
Second, verify that the niche or topic is popular or in demand. To do this, first check out Google’s free Keyword Planner Tool. After you sign in, click on “Search for new keywords or ad group ideas” and type in your niche to topic idea into the field below.
Below that you’ll see a sections that says “Targeting.” Type in “United States” in the field below that to make sure you are only looking at the number of searches in the U.S. (The U.S. has the biggest number of internet users and online consumers with extra cash to spend.) Click on “get ideas” and take a look at the search volume under the tab titled “Keyword ideas.”
You should aim for keywords that get at least 10,000 searches a month to ensure that there are enough potential readers interested in the topic.
Another way to verify the popularity of your topic is on Amazon itself. Go to Amazon and look up Kindle ebooks on your niche or topic. Click on each book on your topic and scroll down to the bottom of the product description page to find the book’s Kindle Bestseller Rankings number.
If you find that a number of books on your topic have a Bestseller Ranking number of 30,0000 or less, it means these books are successfully selling about 10 copies a day. Since most Kindle ebooks are priced at $2.99 each this means they are earning about $20 a day (after you subtract the 30 percent commission rate amazon takes out).
If your goals are smaller than that, you could aim for something that gets into the top 100,000, which is about 1 book a day and a profit of $2 a day. Once you have multiple books for sale on Amazon and each are selling at least 1 copy a day, this could add up to a pretty good monthly profit.
Although the minimum age to join Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing program is 18 years old, parents and guardians of a minor can open a KDP account for them and serve as the minor’s publisher.
Writing a book can seem like a daunting task but it actually isn’t. Most ebooks are much shorter than traditional books. They’re often about 20,000 words or so and usually focus on and discuss one topic in detail, instead of giving a large amount of general, broad information. If you stick to a writing schedule of at least one hour a day, you can probably complete your ebook in about six weeks or so.
Just remember that once you’ve written your ebook, hire a freelance editor or proofread and edit it. This will cost about $50-$100, but it is a very important step. Editing is one of the most important aspects of book publishing.
A poorly edited book will result in bad reviews which will then result into low sales. The money you spend on an editor is incredibly important for the success of your ebook. You can find freelance editors on sites like elance.com, odesk.com or on reddit/r/forhire.
If you want to test out Amazon’s Kindle Program first without committing to the task of writing an entire ebook from scratch, you can always edit and publish public domain books on Kindle. Public domain books are books that have an expired copyright. Typically, these are books that were published prior to 1923. Some places you can find public domain books are:
Google Search – type in your topic of interest, click on “books” in the navigation menu, click on “Sort by revelence” in the navigation menu, on the drop menu click on “19th century” or “20th century” and look for books with a publication date prior to 1923.
Gutenberg.org – Many of the books in the Gutenberg catalog are in the public domain. Not all of them are though, so do a search for your topic and double check the publication date on any books you find.
Feedbooks – click on “Public Domain” in the navigation menu at the top of the page to find a list of books in the public domain.
Amazon only allows you to publish public domain books on Kindle if the books aren’t already in its Kindle library. If they are, you can still publish the book but only if you add annotations, such as a new introduction or preface or etc, or add at least 10 illustrations. If you do annotate or add illustrations, you need to add the words: (Annotated) or (Illustrated) to the title in order for it be accepted by Amazon.
To format the book in order to add the illustrations or annotations, you need to either copy and paste the text or type the text into a word processing document.
Copying and pasting the text is much faster and easier but it is difficult to do because many public domain books online are in an image type format that doesn’t allow copying of text.
You may be able to find an epub version on InternetArchive.com, which you can then copy and paste it into a word processing document. The only catch is that epub books tend to be riddled with typos and errors so it will take a bit of editing and proofreading to get the text right.
The only downside to selling public domain books is that they don’t sell as well as new books because they have been around for a long time and are available everywhere.
Also, Amazon gives you a smaller commission on public domain books, 35 percent instead of 70 percent. Although, if you add some interesting new material or photos and make your edition stand out from all the others, the book could potentially sell well.
