Working from the comfort of your home can be a great experience. There are many benefits of working from home, which include less distractions, no commute time, flexible schedule and etc.
However, working by yourself all day can make some people lazy and a little stir crazy. With no one there to motivate you or to talk to you, it’s sometimes hard to stay on track and avoid loneliness.
For this reason, it is highly important to find ways to stay sane and keep motivated. Here are a few helpful tips on working from home:
Set a Schedule:
Setting your own schedule is one of the greatest perks of working from home. Yet, believe it or not, without an established schedule, your productivity will most likely decrease.
Without a schedule, it is hard to get started each day and even harder to stay on track. The lines between work and play begin to blur and you lose sight of your daily goals and objectives.
With a schedule, you know exactly when to work and when to play. It will help you remain focused on your daily tasks at hand until your designated quitting time. There will be no more confusion about what you need to get done and when it needs to be done.
Take a Break:
Part of setting a schedule includes designating break times. It’s easy, especially when working from home, to work non-stop without taking a moment to rest your eyes or grab a bite to eat.
With so much to do and no distractions, you can fall into a habit of overworking very quickly. Scheduling in a break every few hours will help you avoid burnout and ensure sure that you get the proper rest and refueling that your body needs. It will also help you reduce stress and tension.
Remember though, once break time is over, get back to work! Don’t let extending your break time become a habit.
Set boundaries with family and friends. Inform them of your work schedule and ask them to respect it. Since you work at home, many people feel you are not as busy and are more available than if you were at a traditional workplace.
Therefore, they will interrupt and distract you often. Ask them not to unless it is absolutely necessary. Ask them not to call you during work hours (unless it’s an emergency) and don’t let them stop by your work space and distract you during work hours.
It may take some time for them to adjust, but once they realize that you are serious about your work time, they will begin to respect it.
Create a Work Space:
To help you stay on schedule and keep organized, it is helpful to have a designated work space. This should be where you keep all of your work materials, such as your laptop, pens, pencils, computer desk, or whatever it is that you need to get your work done.
Set up your work space in a private, quiet area. Having your own work space will help you stay in work mode and avoid distractions.
A designated work space will also help set boundaries for your friends and family. Tell them you are not to be disturbed while in your work space. They’ll soon learn to leave you alone when you are there.
Get Out of the House:
One downside to working from home is isolation and loneliness. Working by yourself all day can get to you.
To keep yourself sane, stave off loneliness by making lunch plans with a friend or family member, taking a scheduled walk around the block every afternoon or even take your laptop to a nearby cafe once a week or so to get some work done there.
As long as you get out of your isolated environment once in a while and socialize with other people, it will prevent you from feeling completely cut off from society.
